Jimmy Robinson the Convener of the Junior Koi-Hai Reunion tells us
Junior Koi Hai Reunion Oxford 11th October 2014
The Junior Koi Hai Reunion is an informal social occasion when children and relatives of those who worked in tea in Assam and surrounding areas in the 1950s to the 1980s can meet. This year 42 guests attended the 3rd Junior Koi Hai Reunion in Oxford on Saturday 11th October.
Some had travelled from as far away as Perth, Australia and Singapore with Shikha Tuli (nee Chatterjee) for the event. This year for the first time we had members of the older generation with Clive and Caroline Roberson as well as several who had never been before with one or two from Darjeeling such as Rajiv Jaitly. Neil Dunlop reported on progress with the sponsored pupil with the Dr Graham’s Homes. As with previous years guests brought souvenirs such as BOAC Junior Jet Club books and sweet tins, maps of Assam, photo albums and videos. Some had returned to Assam over the past year and shared their experiences and tips for those planning on visiting next year. It is clear the Reunion has fostered stronger links with the community of tea planters in Assam as well as broadening the focus of the group to Darjeeling and the Dooars as well as Bangladesh. The now established Junior Koi Hai page is used as a way of communicating with other Junior Koi Hai members across continents, keeping people in touch with each other and sharing memories. The photos from the Reunion have prompted keen interest and renewed long lost links and helped those searching for their own ancestral past and the older generations of tea planters who worked in North East India.
Next year the Junior Koi Hai Reunion will take place on Saturday 17th October 2015
and will be hosted by Diana Owen at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trustin Stratford Upon Avon.
This is the photo taken on the day--smiling faces enjoying it all !!
